National Orientation Agency, NOA, has tasked parents to ensure the protection and recognition of children’s rights as an essential component of human rights.

The State Director of NOA in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Mkpoutom Mkpoutom made the call while addressing parents and children of Sanctified Mount Zion Church, Ikot Oku Ikono in Uyo, to mark the 2025 Children’s Day celebration.

Mkpoutom said it is important for parents to recognise that children are entitled to specific protections and freedoms due to their vulnerability and developmental needs.

According to him, these are embedded in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, CRC, adopted in 1989.

He added that every child deserved equal rights, regardless of their race, gender, disability and economic status of their parents.

“Children have the inherent right to life and parents have an obligation to provide conditions that promote their survival and development; including access to healthcare, education  and an adequate standard of living,” the director said.

Also, head of Department for Youth Engagements and Inclusion at NOA, Mr Anietie Udofia noted that children’s rights were fundamental to creating a just and equitable society.

Udofia said  recognising and advocating for these rights could help ensure that every child had the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their circumstances.

“The commitment to uphold children’s rights must be constant, transcending borders, cultures and communities to foster an environment where every child can grow, learn and participate fully in the society,” he said.

Responding on behalf of the parents, Mr Kingsley Effiong commended the efforts of NOA in educating the Nigerian public on several issues that promote the development of an ideal society.

He said  parents would continue to do their best in taking care of their children and ensuring the recognition of their rights.
