Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Edo State Branch, has alerted residents to the outbreak of diphtheria and dengue fever, urging all to embrace routine immunisation to prevent diphtheria infection.
NMA also tasked residents to embrace preventive measures to protect themselves, families and communities.
The Branch Chairman, Dr Eustace Oseghale, made the call in a statement made available to newsmen at the weekend in Benin.
He said these diseases pose serious public health threat and urgent preventive measures must be taken to protect individuals, families and communities.
Oseghale noted that the symptoms of diphtheria include sore throat, difficulty swallowing, mild fever and general weakness.
According to him, Dengue Fever symptoms are high fever (up to 40°C), severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle, joint and bone pain (often called “breakbone fever”), nausea and vomiting
among others.
The NMA called on residents to protect themselves and the community by ensuring routine immunisation with pentavalent and Td vaccines, maintaining good hygiene and avoiding close contact with infected or ill individuals.
He added that if any of the following symptoms are noticed, residents should seek early medical attention.
According to him, preventing Dengue Fever is possible by eliminating mosquito breeding sites and removing stagnant water around homes.
“Use mosquito nets and insect repellents to prevent bites. Wear protective clothing to reduce exposure, seek prompt medical care if symptoms develop and call for coordinated action.”
He called for synergy between the NMA and the state government led by Governor Monday Okpebholo in the fight against diphtheria and other disease outbreaks in the state.
“We urge the Edo State government and all stakeholders to take swift action to halt the spread of these diseases by strengthening routine immunisation to prevent diphtheria infections,” he said.
The NMA advocated enhanced vector control measures to reduce mosquito populations, improve surveillance and case management for early detection and treatment.
It said it remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguard public health. Our members are actively involved in providing clinical services for diagnosis and treatment.
He emphasized the conduct of public health education to raise awareness, support vaccination campaigns to prevent further outbreaks, collaborate with government agencies to ensure an effective response.
Oseghale commended the steps taken by the management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, ISTH, National Orthopedic Hospital and the State Ministry of Health.
He urged all residents to remain vigilant, take preventive measures and report suspected cases promptly.
