Nigerian Celebrities Lead Inspiring Independence Day Celebrations

Date:

As Nigeria marked its 64th Independence Day on October 1, 2024, several of the country’s top celebrities used their platforms to encourage citizens and spread messages of hope.

In a year marked by significant challenges, including economic hardships and political tensions, entertainers such as Funke Akindele, Mr Eazi, and Destiny Etiko took to social media to reflect on the nation’s resilience and potential for growth.

Nollywood actress Funke Akindele, famous for her comedic role in Jenifa’s Diary, shared an uplifting video on Instagram. Dressed in Nigeria’s national colors, Akindele urged her fans to remain hopeful for a better future, despite the country’s difficulties. She expressed her deep connection to Nigeria, pointing out that her success and the empowerment of over 175 crew members from her recent projects were all based in the country. Funke emphasized her commitment to staying in Nigeria and contributing to its growth, rather than relocating abroad, stating, “I will not japa, I will remain in Nigeria, Nigeria go better”.

Musician Mr Eazi also joined the celebrations, taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account to express pride in the strength and resilience of Nigerians. He acknowledged the country’s struggles but encouraged optimism, hoping for a brighter future. His message echoed the sentiments of many citizens who continue to advocate for unity and progress in the face of ongoing challenges.

However, not all celebrities shared the same tone of optimism. Actress Destiny Etiko made headlines for her sharp critique of the Independence Day celebrations. The outspoken star took to social media to express her displeasure, asking fans not to send her congratulatory messages and questioning the relevance of celebrating independence amidst Nigeria’s current struggles.

On the music scene, Nigeria’s Independence Day also served as an opportunity for artists to reflect on the country’s cultural impact. Songs like Onyeka Onw
