Niger Establishes Law For Regulation Of Liquor Sale

Date:

FROM SAMSON ALFA, MINNA

Niger State government has put in place punitive measures to combat crime in the nooks and crannies of Minna and environs through re-enforcement of liquor board laws.

Chairman of Niger State Liquor Board, Barrister Yahaya Halidu, who stated this in an interview with AljazirahNigeria in his office in Minna, said the sale and consumption of liquor must be carried out according to the law.

He said the main objective of the board is revenue drive aimed at increasing the revenue base of the state to achieve the ‘New Niger’ agenda.

“Officials of the board including myself usually go out to collect license fees, as well as enforce the law in prohibited areas, adding that the law enforcing the sale of alcohol is still in force.

“Sometimes because of the importance attached to the payment of license fees, even during weekends, I sneak out to monitor the payment of license fees. I am not saying any of my staff has been found wanting, they are committed and sincere. I will deal with anyone found wanting, it is a responsibility of trust which I will not toy with”.

On the operation of liquor boards in local government areas, Halidu said strategies have been mapped out by the board in the 25 local government areas to punish violators.
