National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, yesterday, distributed relief items to 300 households of Persons With Disabilities, PWDs, affected by rainstorm and windstorm.
Director-general of NEMA, Hajiya Zubaida Umar made the disclosure while distributing the relief materials to the affected beneficiaries in eight communities in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State.
The communities include Bela, Rangaza, Yada Kunya, Jajira, Kera, Malori, Farar Gona and Tsamiya.
The gesture was done in collaboration with the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, NCPWD.
The D-G, represented by the Coordinator, NEMA, Kano Territorial Office, Dr Nura Abdullahi, said the items were intended to address the immediate needs of the beneficiaries and support their recovery efforts.
“I extend my deepest sympathies to the people of these communities, particularly those with disabilities who were adversely affected by the 2024 windstorm and rainstorm.
“We recognise the challenges you have faced, we remain steadfast in our commitment to provide support and relief during these trying times.
“As citizens of this great nation, you have the right to be cared for in moments of hardship.
“This distribution exercise is a testament to our dedication to upholding that right and ensuring your needs are met,” Umar said.
The director-general noted that the distribution was made following a request from NCPWD for NEMA’s intervention.
“After assessment, findings revealed significant damage, impacting over 250 individuals who were in urgent need of assistance.
“We approved the distribution of relief materials in line with the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of the federal government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, to address the immediate needs of the affected persons,” she noted.
Umar listed the relieve items to include; 257 bags of 25kg rice; 257 bags of 25kg maize, 257 cartons of spaghetti and 25 cartons of seasoning cubes.
Others were; 30 bags of iodised salt, 30 cartons of tomato paste (sachets), 771 nylon mats, 771 blankets and 771 treated mosquito nets.
The Executive Secretary, NCPWD, Chief Ayuba Burki-Gufwan, represented by the NCPWD Officer, Women Agenda Unit, Hajiya Fatima Abubakar-Doki, commended NEMA for its support in making the relief effort possible.
He said the commission would continue to support and advocate for the rights and needs of people living with disabilities.
The Executive Secretary, Kano State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Alhaji Isyaku Kubarachi, urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Kano State Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with disabilities, Malam Musa Muhammad-Shaga, commended NEMA and NCPWD for the gesture and promised to make judicious use of the items. (NAN)
