The National Institute of Sports (NIS), located in Surulere, Lagos, has been left in a deplorable state, despite its critical role in training and retraining Nigeria’s coaches and sports medical personnel.
Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, the newly appointed Director-General of the institute, embarked on an inspection tour of the facility on Monday and was confronted with scenes of neglect and decay.
From the dormitories to the offices and toilet facilities, the entire institute bore the signs of long-term abandonment. The water and electricity systems, as well as general maintenance, are in urgent need of rehabilitation.
Deeply moved by the level of deterioration, Shaibu vowed to bring the institution back to life. He emphasized that restoring the institute will be a top priority under his leadership.
Recognizing the scale of the challenge, the DG has declared a state of emergency for the renovation and revitalization of the National Institute of Sports, signaling his readiness to take swift and decisive action to return it to its former glory.
