In a bid to promote national unity and development, the National Association of Former Local Government Council Chairmen in Nigeria (NALGON) Emeritus has launched the ‘One Nigeria Project’.

Speaking at a world press conference on Thursday in Abuja during the unveiling of the project, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Rt. Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji, who represents the Kaura Namoda/Birnin Magaji Federal Constituency of Zamfara State in the House of Representatives, stressed that division remains a significant threat to the nation’s peace, security, and stability.

According to Jaji, “NALGON Emeritus has come together after recognizing the crucial importance of unity at this critical time. National interest has increasingly been undermined by divisive politics, with unity—our guiding principle—often overshadowed by sentiments. This division poses a serious threat to the security, peace, and stability of our nation.”

He emphasized the historical significance of local government administration in Nigeria, noting its evolution from the pre-colonial era through the colonial period to the post-independence era. With 774 local governments and 8,809 councilors nationwide, local governments play a vital role in grassroots governance and community development.

Jaji highlighted NALGON’s unique position in Nigeria’s democracy, stating:
“NALGON sees itself as a key player in Nigeria’s democracy, understanding the needs of the people at the grassroots level. We have come together to contribute our voices and strength to becoming an objective force for hope, unity, and reconciliation—without compromise.”

The One Nigeria Project, he said, is a collective vision aimed at addressing fundamental challenges such as security, peace, and national stability through collaboration with other stakeholders.

“After careful reflection on the challenges confronting us, we believe it is imperative to collaborate with other stakeholders to address the pressing issues of security, peace, unity, and stability. These elements are fundamental to national growth, prosperity, and justice at all levels. The One Nigeria Project represents our collective vision for a powerful, united, and progressive nation,” he said.

Jaji commended the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in addressing insecurity and the economic crisis. He praised the President’s commitment to local government autonomy, which he described as a significant step toward strengthening democracy and inclusive governance.

“His reforms to improve economic stability and security are commendable. We are confident that these efforts will help transition Nigeria from recession to prosperity. Additionally, as grassroots politicians, we commend the President’s commitment to local government autonomy, which demonstrates his political will to strengthen democracy and create a more inclusive governance system,” Jaji added.

He called on all stakeholders to support the One Nigeria Project and work together towards achieving common national objectives.

The launch of the One Nigeria Project marks a significant step by NALGON Emeritus towards fostering national cohesion, peace, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
