Nigerian music industry mourns one of its most iconic figures, Onyeka Onwenu.
The “Elegant Stallion,” as she was affectionately known, was laid to rest after a touching funeral service at the Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju, Lagos.
The artist died on July 30 at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja, after collapsing at an event honouring Dr Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
Onyeka, who was 72 years old, left an indelible mark on Nigerian music.
Her powerful voice, captivating stage presence and socially conscious lyrics resonated with generations of fans.
The funeral service was a solemn occasion, attended by family, friends and colleagues from the entertainment industry.
Family and friends gathered at the Ebony Vaults, Ikoyi to pay their last respect to the music icon before she was finally laid to rest.
Tributes poured in from various quarters, celebrating Onwenu’s contributions to Nigerian music and her unwavering commitment to social justice.
She is survived by her two sons.
