Chief Judge of Sokoto State, Justice Muhammad Sifawa yesterday  inaugurated a nine-member Tribunal to oversee petitions related to the local government elections held on September 21 in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tribunal is divided into three panels, with each panel consisting of a Chairman and two members, assigned to one of the state’s three Senatorial districts.

The chairmen are: Justice Muhammad Marafa (Sokoto North), Justice Muhammad Bello (Sokoto South) and Justice Junaidu Altine (Sokoto East).

In his address, the chief judge urged the members to uphold the highest ethical standards and avoid compromising their duties.

He emphasised the importance of diligence, integrity, and adherence to the principles of the legal profession.

Sifawa highlighted the gravity of their task, saying that it was not only crucial for the state but for the nation as a whole.

“This is why only individuals with proven integrity and a history of professional conduct were selected for these roles.

“Your conscience will be put to the test, and I am confident that you will discharge your responsibilities without fear or favor”, he stated.

The CJ also reminded the members that the assignment was time-sensitive and encouraged them to handle petitions swiftly and with due care.

Speaking to journalists after the inauguration, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Nasiru Binji, explained that the formation of the tribunals was a legal requirement following every election.

“The law mandates the Chief Judge to inaugurate Tribunals to hear and determine any petitions that may arise from the local government elections”, he said. (NAN)
