Member representing Akwanga/Nassarawa-Eggon/Wamba Federal Constituency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Jeremiah Umaru, yesterday, organised a peace and security summit as part of efforts to address the security challenges in his constituency.

Speaking at the summit in Akwanaga, Akwanga Local Government Area, Umar said it was a platform for robust engagement as brother and sisters irrespective of political, religious and ethnic differences.

He added that it was also to complement the peace-building efforts of the federal, state, local governments, as well as  mtraditional and religious leaders.

The lawmaker pointed out that security is the collective responsibility of all and not for government and security agencies alone, hence the summit.

He promised to continue to initiate programmes and sponsor quality bills and motions that would address the challenges confronting his constituents.

Also speaking, the North-Central Director of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and resource person at the summit, Mr Bashir Idris-Garba tasked the people to adopt non-violent approach toward addressing conflict.

He added that communication plays an important role in promoting peace and unity, and the absence of it brings suspicion, thereby serving as security threats.

He enjoined community members to embrace each other and respect the believes and interest of one another as a prerequisite for ensuring peaceful coexistence in the society.

In his part, the Chun Mada and Chairman of Akwanga Local Government Area Traditional Council, Samson Gamu-Yare appreciated the lawmaker for the initiative to ensure peace and unity through robust engagement with critical stakeholders.

The monarch promised that the traditional institution would continue to play their roles to ensure that the state remains peaceful.

The summit had in attendance traditional rulers, districts, village and ward heads, student groups, market women, traders, as well as political parties.
