Kwara State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mrs Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu has restated government’s commitment to quality education.
Modibbo-Kawu made the assertion while receiving a delegation from the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, led by its Chairman, Comrade Yahaya Muhammed Ndagi, on Tuesday in Ilorin
The commissioner said Governor AbdulRasaq AbdulRahman administration’s commitment to improve education in the state is evident with the establishment of Kwara State University of Education, Ilorin.
“This administration is committed to creating more opportunities for higher learning, ensuring that students and academic staff benefited from a well-structured and forward-thinking educational system.
“The government is taking all necessary steps to address the concerns of COEASU and the entire college community.
“Governor AbdulRazaq values the contributions of the academic staff and remains committed to their professional growth and the development of the educational institutions in the state,” she said.
Earlier in his remark, Ndagi expressed gratitude to the state government for the prompt payment of salaries and allowances.
He said the prompt payments contributed to the smooth academic operations of the college.
The COEASU chairman, however, used the opportunity to highlight several pressing issues that require immediate attention.
Ndagi said the most important was the process to change the legal framework of the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, which should be in line with the establishment of the Kwara State University of Education.
The chairman further stressed the need for a clear transition framework and the urgency of addressing leadership vacancies, among other concerns.
The National Universities Commission, NUC, officially recognised the university on July 30, 2024, marking it as the 64th state-owned university and 274th in Nigeria.
In November 2024, Governor Abdulrahman inaugurated the university’s Governing Council, appointed Prof. Shuaib Oba AbdulRaheem as its Chairman and pro-chancellor, facilitating the institution’s official takeoff. (NAN)
