Kano State government has asked the federal government for compensation after the Durbar celebrations were cancelled for two consecutive years.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Tajo Uthman, made the call yesterday during a Sallah homage by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House Kano.
Uthman said the state had suffered huge financial losses due to the suspension of the annual cultural event, which traditionally attracts local and international tourists.
He said “The Durbar is recognised by UNESCO as a heritage event. During the festivities, Kano generates substantial revenue from foreigners and visitors.”
He noted that the economic impact of the cancellation has been significant enough to affect the state’s annual budget.
He stressed that the federal government must take responsibility for the economic impact of the cancellations and compensate the state accordingly.
