NUJ Protests As Emmanuel Tags Journalists As COVID-19 Careers

Journalists under the aegis of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council have threatened to boycott the coverage of government activities following the decision by the governor Udom Emmanuel-led administration to bar newsmen from the Government House’s events on Monday.

The governor was said to have ordered security operatives at the Government House gate to stop Journalists from covering two major events including the swearing-in of eight new Commissioners and the inauguration of the new officials of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) State Working Committee (SWC).

Attempt by Journalists to enter the Government House for the events were turned down by stern-looking security operatives who said they had order from above to bar Journalists from covering the event because of the recent discovery of over 16 media officials covering the Government House were infected by the virus and were isolated and treated at the government medical facility.

Meanwhile, Journalists of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ, Akwa Ibom state have resolved to boycott government activities of the tag, adding that such disposition from the government was a blatant case of stigmatization.

The decision to stop reporting government events was taken on Monday at the editorial meeting of the Chapel. 

Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel in the state,  Comrade Idongesit Ashameri said it was preposterous that government could allow party loyalists, well-wishers and members of interest groups to attend the two inaugurations while barring journalists from performing their duties. 

She said that stopping correspondents from covering activities at the Government House amounted to stigmatimazition and a slight on the sacrosanct watchdog role of the media in the country’s democracy.

Ashameri,  who maintained that journalists are not the real carriers of Covid-19, added that journalists are rather the victims of the pandemic who are exposed to politicians and government officials.
