Insecurity: Anambra Introduces ID Checks For Tenants, Guests

Date:

Anambra State government has directed all hotel owners and landlords to request a valid means of identification from their guests and tenants as part of efforts to enhance security.

This directive came days after security operatives said they discovered over 30 graves and a shrine at a hotel in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

In a statement yesterday, the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, said the measure aims to curb insecurity and promote a safer environment in the state.

Mefor outlined the new requirements for hotel owners, stating that all guests must present a valid government-issued ID such as a National Identity Card, international passport or voter’s card.

“Directives for hotel owners – all hotel guests must provide a valid government-issued National Identity Card, international passport, or voter’s card to the hotel management,” the statement reads.

“Hotel owners must photocopy these documents and submit them to the president-general of the community, who will then forward them to the local government mayor and the state government.”

Failure to comply, the statement warned, would result in the forfeiture of the hotel and possible prosecution.

Landlords are also required to submit a properly filled tenant information form, along with valid identification, to their community’s president-general.

“Directives for president-generals of town unions include that they are now chairmen of the security committee of ‘Agunaechemba’ in their respective communities,” Mefor added.

They are required to submit detailed monthly reports to the state government. Failure to do so will result in suspension and sanctions.

Additionally, the state has announced a ₦5 million reward for anyone who provides valuable information on criminal activities.

Mefor urged residents to support the initiative, emphasising that the measures are designed to create a safer and more secure Anambra State.
