BY INIOBONG SUNDAY, UYO

Amid factional battle involving the immediate past Minister of Niger Delta Affairs,  Chief Godswill Akpabio and the immediate past National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator John Akpanudoedehe, the governorship candidate has emerged for Akwa Ibom state going into the 2023 general elections.

He is Obong Akan Udofia, a multi billionaire oil Tycoon from Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of the state.

In a protracted contest which lasted for several hours from about 11 pm Thursday till early Friday morning, Udofia, polled a total of 1,227 votes to defeat eight others in the contest.

However, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom state APC Gubernatorial Primary Election, Mr. Tunde Omoba Ajibutu, who declared Udofia winner, said he won the contest having satisfied all requirements and condition’s for the polls.

He commended delegates for their orderly and peaceful conduct during and after the exercise and urged aggrieved parties to sheathe their swords and embrace the winner as only one person is entitled to the party governorship ticket at a time.In his post victory remarks, Udofia was full of praises to the officials, delegates, stakeholders and leaders of the party and pledged to run an all-inclusive government, if elected.

Our Correspondent gathered that bloody violence was averted when thugs alleged to be loyal to Senator Akpanudoedehe, blocked officials sent from the national secretariat of APC in Abuja, to conduct the polls, in a failed attempt to hijack ballot materials to another destination.

It was learnt operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) were called in to disperse the hoodlums with superior fire power along Oron road as the officials tried to make their way from the airport to 6, Ekpo Obot street, Uyo, venue of the state APC.

“This ugly development forced the contest to delay till this early hours of Friday, and we thank God, no casualty was recorded; the entire exercise went successfully”, Chief Michael   Bassey, an APC elder in Etinan told Newsman yesterday.

“We’re happy that APC now have a capable candidate to match Pastor Umo Eno of the ruling Peoples Democric Party (PDP) at the general elections next year”, he added and enjoined other aggrieved aspirants to bury the discontents over the polls and unite in the battle to rescue the state In 2023.
