Gov Ambode In Secret Talks With PDP

By Chidozie Ogbonnaya

Following the series of struggles with his political Godfather, and party men, the outgoing Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, is currently having secret discussion with the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, AljazirahNigeria learned.

Gov. Ambode who had to relinquish his second term governorship ambition, beat the expectation of numerous political analysts when he supported the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship flag bearer, Babajide Sanwo-Olu even with a bruised ego. AljazirahNigeria recalls that the governor outrageously lost the party’s guber ticket to the former Lagos commissioner of commerce and industry after earlier attempts to resist being pushed out of the race but could not withstand the prowess of APC national leader, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.
Surprisingly, the reason for Ambode’s unprecedented ousting was largely unconvincing especially when Tinubu said: “Governor Ambode has done well during his time in office, but he has not been a good party man.” Even before Ambode lost at the party’s primary election, AljazirahNigeria gathered that nearly a dozen different political parties have to pitch their loyalty with Tinubu backed Sanwo-Olu to fly their flag in the March 9 governorship election.
It will be recalled that Gov. Ambode having fallen out of favour with his Godfather, worsened the matter when he got into a serious brawl with Sanwo-Olu, accusing him of past records of crime, hence not fit to govern the state.
The embattled governor was also involved in a last-minute squabble with the state lawmakers over the 2019 budget presentation. The Lagos State House of Assembly threatened the governor with impeachment for failing to follow the traditional laying of the budget before the House. However, the impeachment move was doused with a truce between the two arms of government.
A Lagos-based political analyst, Boluwatife Samson, told AljazirahNigeria that Gov. Ambode has always operated under the shadows of the APC national leader who virtually own and controls the commercial capital of the country.        He stressed that the outgoing governor has hitherto had enough humiliation and was beginning to get over it by joining the President Muhammadu Buhari presidential campaign train but the attempt by the state lawmakers to impeach dampened his trust in the ruling APC.
An inside source at the Alausa house said Ambode’s elasticity for loyalty to Tinubu and APC has been destroyed; hence he has formed secret alliance with the Uche Secondus-led PDP in order to get back at his tormentors. “Ambode has been pushed around a lot, only a few politicians will stomach what he stomached. I wasn’t surprised when I saw the secret talks between him and the opposition goes ahead, although still airtight for now. With what Ambode went through, I think I will even do worse than him,” he said.
In a similar vein, a special assistant to the governor, name withheld, corroborated to the governor’s secret meeting with PDP in a chat with our correspondent in Lagos. “You know this man’s ego has been heavily bruised in all sense, so I don’t expect anything less. But the good part is that every move is still coded. In Nigeria, governors are emperors but in his case, he is a boy. He has been beaten severally and the secret alignment is the only way to cry out. If APC loses out in the presidential poll, it will avail us the opportunity to teach them some lessons and pay them back in their own coin. It may seem hard but possible. You remember that my boss having worked from the Tinubu dynasty for a long time have enough information that can make him and the party lose sleep,” he said.
It will be recalled that PDP governorship candidate in Lagos, Jimi Agbaje jumped into the defence of Governor Ambode during his back and forth with the Lagos Assembly. Agbaje in the heat of the impeachment threat asked members of the House of Assembly and the ruling APC not to plunge the state into chaos over moves to impeach the Governor, suing for peace, and warned that the move was capable of jeopardising the smooth running of the state.
“Of course, the way Lagos politics has been structured over the last two decades, government actions are often dictated by open and covert objectives. That, the legislators are hinging their action on the purported delay of the budget is simply a smokescreen for a very shameful undertone that the Honourable assembly members will not want to make open. They are yet to tell us their actual motivation for this superfluous move to shame the Governor,” Agbaje said.
Although many APC stalwarts from the South West kept mute to the treatment meted out to Gov. Ambode by “Jagaban,” however, their silence does not completely mean acceptance or conformity with Ambode’s travails.
Recently, Tinubu’s supremacy has suffered blows from younger leaders from the South- west whose quest to be relevant is not in tandem with the Jagaban. It is no more secret that, the likes of former Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, Governor Ibikunle Amosu of Ogun State, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, and some Senators, are no more loyal to the dictates of Bola Tinubu.
The governors who according to reports are referred to as an “Emerging Bloc” in the South-west have all fallen out with Tinubu are however believed to be monitoring the Ambode situation closely. Tinubu and Amosun’s cozy relationship went toxic following the open acceptance of Amosun’s estranged benefactor, Chief Segun Osoba’s return to the party.  Osoba, having played a prominent role in the formation of the APC had defected to the SDP in 2015 as soon as he lost the battle for the control of the APC structures in Ogun State to Amosun.
To worsen the matter, the pelting of stones by hoodlums at the APC electioneering ground  involving Bola Tinubu at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun State, was clearly seen as disrespect and disregard for the biggest political stalwart in the region. APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole was booed and stoned by some angry people at the gathering in the presence of President Buhari and Mr. President was not spared too.
Amosun, who was fingered, being the architect of the shameful incident at the Ogun APC rally, however, denied allegations of sponsoring thugs to the presidential rally of the party in the state. He faulted the claims, saying it was ridiculous that a party would accuse a governor of sponsoring thugs to the rally organised and hosted by him in his state. But the APC have threatened a payback for Amosun.
