From RABILU ABUBAKAR, GOMBE
Gombe State governor, Inuwa Yahaya has announced plans to establish a 30-hectare ultra-modern abattoir and international livestock market, a move hailed by stakeholders as a game-changer for the state’s livestock sector.
The project, initiated under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support, L-PRES, Project, aims to modernise livestock management and drive economic growth in the state.
At a presentation held in Gombe, the State Coordinator, Professor Usman Abubakar, unveiled the site plan.

He emphasized government’s commitment to inclusivity, stating that Governor Yahaya had directed the team to engage stakeholders to ensure that the project aligns with their needs.
Professor Abubakar highlighted the untapped potentials of the livestock sector and its economic importance.
“Livestock has been overshadowed by crop production for too long. This project represents a paradigm shift to transform Gombe into a hub for livestock production and export,” he said.
The initiative combines modern technology and innovative strategies to optimise livestock production and align with global standards.
Key components include meat processing, leather production and exporting high-value products to international markets.
Spanning 39 hectares, the proposed site will feature livestock markets, allocating five hectares for cattle, three hectares for sheep and goats, and two hectares for poultry in a modern abattoir, four hectares facility equipped with advanced cooling systems, water supply, storage units and a tannery for leather production, a motel, fire station and police station.
The project will adopt successful models from other regions, such as tanneries in Kano to position Gombe as a leader in leather production and export.
Abubakar also noted that the initiative prioritises job creation for Gombe State residents, offering opportunities in the livestock market, abattoir and related industries.
