As the 2024 Gateway Games progresses, the Director General of National Sports Commission and Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee, Hon Bukola Olopade, has stated that the sports sector holds immense potential to drive and transform Nigeria’s economy.

Speaking at the newly constructed world-class swimming facility within the MKO Abiola International Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Olopade emphasized the economic ripple effect already visible in the host city.

“Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, has become a hub of economic activity during these Games”, he said. “Thousands of Nigerians are benefitting financially, hotels are booked, transport services are thriving, and small businesses are booming. This is the power of sports”.

Olopade noted that if sports are properly managed and invested in, they can play a critical role in national economic development.

When asked how the organizing committee plans to sustain the momentum and success of the festival, he responded confidently:

“We will maintain the momentum, and naturally, it will grow. The crowd, the energy, the excitement it’s all organic and will keep building. What’s most fulfilling is seeing thousands of young Ogun State indigenes participating, building capacity, and feeling proud to be part of history”.

He also praised the event’s logistics, particularly accommodation and feeding arrangements, which he described as “seamlessly executed”, noting that no complaints had been recorded so far.

“This festival is unique in its organization and impact. It brings me personal joy to see that what I’ve always said about Nigeria is now manifesting we are a great country with the best media, and we must start marketing ourselves to the world”, Olopade said.

He recalled similar economic success stories from the 2006 edition of the festival, adding that several entrepreneurs became millionaires from the opportunities created by the Games.

“Sports is not just entertainment it’s economy, education, infrastructure, and public health. It should be viewed on the same level as technology in national development”.

He concluded by appreciating the support of the Ogun State Government and the President of Nigeria for helping make the 2024 Gateway Games a reality.
