A Non-Governmental Organisation, NGO, committed to poverty and environmental risk reduction in the Niger Delta region, has launched an action plan to mitigate the harmful effects of gas flaring, carbon emissions and environmental pollution threatening residents of oil and gas host communities.

Network Advancement Programme for Poverty and Disaster Risk Reduction, NAPPDRR, led by its Executive Director, Emem Edoho, and the Programme Officer in charge of Climate, Environment and Energy Justice, Helen Eyo, explained that the project is aimed at facilitating clean energy innovations in the affected areas.

Speaking with journalists in Uyo, Akwa State, yesterday, Edoho explained that the scheme tagged ‘Green The Future’ project is aimed at accelerating decarbonisation and community resilience in  Akwa Ibom host communities.

He disclosed that NAPPDRR is working with other partners in executing the project.

“This innovative project is made possible through the generous support of Global Greengrants Fund, GGF, and Oilwatch Africa, OA.

“The project seeks to promote methane emissions reduction, community-led energy transition and clean energy, as well as agroecology training begining from Esit Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

“By accelerating decarbonisation and community resilience, the project aims to create a sustainable future for the host communities,” he stated.

On the expected outcome, the NAPPDRR  director listed the targeted areas of coverage to include “implementation of effective strategies to reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas sector, promoting a cleaner environment and mitigating climate change.”

He noted that “the community-led energy transition will empower local communities to take ownership of their energy transition, promoting clean energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Agroecology training, he explained would provide training and capacity-building programes for local farmers, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and enhancing food security.

“It will promote sustainable livelihoods, enhancing disaster risk reduction and improving overall well-being.

We are thrilled to launch this project which aligns with our mission to promote sustainable development and reduce poverty in vulnerable communities.

“We are grateful for the support of Global Greengrants Fund and Oilwatch Africa, and we look forward to working together to create a sustainable future for the host communities.”
