Fulani Herder Killed Farmer For Protesting Over Destruction Of Own Farm

A Makurdi Chief Magistrate court presided over by Vincent Kor, has ordered that a 21 year old Fulani herder, Salisu Audu, be remanded at the Makurdi correctional facility centre for the alleged murder of Igwe Agale.

The accused a herder operating in Iyeche community of Igumale, in Ado Local Government Area, is charged with culpable homicide, causing death of Igwe Agale now deceased and for openly grazing with his cows on a cassava farm belonging to the deceased, contrary to the provisions of the open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment laws of Benue State.

Prosecution has told the court that on the 19th December 2021, one Sunday Ogale, of Iyeche community of Igumale in Ado Local Government Area, reported to the police that he and his father met the accused on their farm with his cows grazing openly and in the cause destroyed their cassava farm valued at about 1 million naira only.

Prosecutor further informed the court that when Igwe Agale now late pleaded with the accused to pursue his cows away from his cassava farm, he became aggressive and in the process removed a matchet and cut Igwe Agale, on his head which as a result of bleeding from the injury, falled down and died on the spot.

During police investigation, the accused was arrested and allegedly confessed committing the crime and prosecution however, opposed to the bail application of the accused on condition that investigation was still in progress and asked for adjournment.

Ruling on the application, the chief magistrate Vincent Kor, did not take the plea of the accused for want of jurisdiction, instead ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Correctional Center Makurdi, and adjourned the matter to the 3rd March this year for further mention.
