FROM RABILU ABUBAKAR, GOMBE
Social Democratic Party ,SDP, in Gombe State has accused Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of exhibiting aggressive behaviour during an alleged altercation with the party’s Acting Chairman, Comrade Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, on a flight from Gombe to Abuja.
In a statement co-signed by Comrade Modibbo and his media adviser, Engr. Muhammad Abdulkadir Kumo, the SDP claimed that Governor Yahaya demonstrated hostility despite efforts by Modibbo to maintain political civility.
The statement alleged that Comrade Modibbo greeted the Governor respectfully as a display of maturity, but the Governor reacted with heated verbal exchanges and an attempt at physical aggression.
According to the SDP, the confrontation continued throughout the flight, with Comrade Modibbo maintaining his composure and choosing not to retaliate. The tension reportedly escalated further after the plane landed in Abuja.
In response to the Governor’s media team’s denial of the incident, the SDP described their statement as “a desperate attempt to mislead the public”. The party accused the administration of engaging in propaganda and avoiding accountability.
“This cover-up attempt only highlights the administration’s intolerance, lack of decorum, and disdain for opposition voices”, the statement read.
The SDP called on Governor Yahaya’s team to provide evidence disproving their claims rather than issuing denials that fail to address the specifics of the incident.
Reiterating its mission to advocate for credible leadership in Gombe State, the SDP vowed not to be deterred by intimidation or reckless conduct.
The party also urged citizens to scrutinize the actions of their leaders, emphasizing the need for humility, maturity, and adherence to democratic principles in governance.
This incident sheds light on the growing tensions between Gombe’s ruling party and the opposition, raising concerns about political tolerance and the ability to engage in civil discourse.
