Finnish Prosecutors Charge Simon Ekpa with Online Terrorism Incitement

Finnish prosecutors announced on Friday that Simon Ekpa has been charged with inciting terrorism online.

Meanwhile, the prosecution authority stated that the charges against four other individuals connected to the case have been dropped due to insufficient evidence.

This information was disclosed in a statement by Finland’s National Prosecution Authority.

According to the statement, the NPA had charged “a Finnish individual in a case involving suspected public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and participation in the activities of a terrorist group.”

The statement noted that the alleged offenses occurred in Lahti between 2021 and 2024 and were linked to efforts by the suspect to create an independent Biafra region in Nigeria.

Although the prosecution authority did not publicly name the individual, Finnish public broadcaster YLE identified him as Simon Ekpa, a separatist figure.

Ekpa, who calls himself the leader of the Biafra Republic’s government in exile, was taken into custody in November.

According to the prosecution authority, the accused remains in detention and has denied the allegations.

The Finnish-Nigerian dual national has also held a position as a local representative of Finland’s conservative National Coalition Party in Lahti, where he served on a public transport committee.
