Federal government has announced that it will pay the outstanding five months N35,000 wage award arrears to civil servants on its payroll.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of Accountant General of the Federation, OAGF, Bawa Mokwa.

Mokwa said the  wage award arrears will be paid in installments for five months, with the first after April  salary.

“The wage award arrears will not be paid with the April  salary; it will come immediately after the salary is paid,” he said.

The director said the federal government is committed to the implementation of policies and agreements that will improve workers welfare.

In October 2023, President Bola Tinubu approved N35,000 provisional wage award for civil servants on the federal government’s payroll for six months.

The payment was expected to commence in September 2023.

The approval was made after a meeting between  representatives of the federal government and leaders of the organised labour to avert the planned indefinite nationwide strike by labour unions.

The labour unions had planned to protest and declare an indefinite strike over petrol subsidy and the economic hardship in the country.

However, the federal government did not commence the payment of the award wage at the time agreed with the labour unions. Even when payment commenced, it was not consistent.
