Federal government has called for collaboration between the Petroleum Ministry and Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in the fight against illegal refining and pipeline vandalism.
Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, during a visit by Bayelsa State NUJ Council on Tuesday, called on journalists to engage in sensitisation programmes to raise awareness about the dangers of these destructive acts.
Lopkobiri, who commended the union for their exemplary leadership and professionalism, added that the visit was both timely and significant, as they pledged their support to advance our shared vision of revitalising the oil industry.
“I had the distinct honour of receiving a delegation from the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bayelsa State Council, who came to identify with the transformative work we are carrying out in the oil sector.
“In my remarks, I commended the NUJ for their exemplary leadership and professionalism. The union has proven to be a valuable partner and I expressed my support for them as worthy ambassadors, helping to convey the realities of our progress.
“However, I urged the delegation to collaborate with us in our fight against pipeline vandalism and illegal refining that continue to harm our environment,” the minister said.
Earlier, the State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Samuel Numonengi reiterated the need for more partnership in training and retraining journalists on how best to report issues of the environment.
He called on journalists to prioritise reporting the challenges of environmental degradation and crude oil theft in a bid to also proffer solutions to the menace.
