Chibok girls currently studying at the American University of Nigeria, AUN, Yola, since they regained freedom from Boko Haram terrorists have received the federal government’s assurance to support them beyond their educational pursuit and prepare them for self development and nation building.
Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Ibrahim, who made this known to journalists in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, after a closed door meeting with the girls and the management of the institution, said the federal government would not relent in its resolve to empower and give them a sustainable future to enable them support the country in nation-building.
She said the visit was premised on the desire of the federal government to fully acquaint itself with the development and welfare of the Chibok students.
She expressed satisfaction with the performance of the girls in their academic pursuit, noting that they had transformed into sharp, smart and confident students with excellent records of performance.
“As you are aware, some years ago, the federal government succeeded in releasing Chibok girls from captivity. So, it entered into a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with AUN to support the rehabilitation of these girls, over 100 of them, but right now, we have about 69 that are still on this rehabilitation programme.
“The MoU has elapsed and we are at the verge of phasing out this project. So, it is important that we have on-the-spot assessment so that whatever decision we make collectively will be for the good of these empowered women,“ the minister said.
According to her, their welfare and well-being like that of other Nigerians is of serious concern to the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
