FG Donates Relief Materials To 6 Flood-hits Akwa Ibom Oil Communities

Hundreds of last year’s devastating floods across six oil producing Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom state have received succour from the Federal Government’s (FG) agency – Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC.

The benefitting oil and gas host communities where the victims were drawn from includes Eket, Eastern Obolo, Mbo, Ibeno, Ikot Abasi and Nsit Ibom LGs.

While distributing the items worth millions of naira, the Head in – charge of the NUPRC office in Eket, Mr Etukudoh Williams, lamented that properties worth millions of naira had been destroyed during the period.

He disclosed that the Commission’s Chief Executive, Mr Gbenga Komolafe, had “graciously approved this token for all the flood-impacted communities, as part of the agency’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative during the yuletide.”

While distributing the items including mattresses, blankets, rice and other edibles, he recalled that “the past few months had been difficult for many in the flood-affected communities.”

“It has been mixed feelings, despair and uncertainty in the minds of the flood victims, especially during yuletide when we were all celebrating in our homes with our families.

“Many have been dislocated in various parts of the country, as well as in our communities here in Akwa Ibom; property and means of livelihood had been destroyed due to the ravaging impact of the flood. I hope the relief materials would help to put smiles on the faces of the people in this difficult time.

Williams, therefore, thanked the FG, Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and the organised private sector for the support and assistance to the communities, noting that “more still needed to be done, to ameliorate the suffering of the victims.”

However, Hon. Joshua Afia, the Chairman of Ikot Abasi LG and his Eastern Obolo counterpart, Abraham Odion, commended the Commission for the laudable gesture, saying “this is first of its kind to the communities of the flood victims in the state”, promising to utilize the relief items judiciously to cushion the pains of the victims.
