A total of five police officers lost their lives, while 11 were injured in the accident, which occurred on Zaria-Kano Expressway as they were returning from election duties in Edo State on September 24.

A statement issued yesterday by the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, said eight of the injured officers had been discharged, while three remain in the hospital.

He stated that Egbetokun had approved the immediate payment of N10 million each to the families of the deceased, N2 million each to those still in the hospital and N500,000 to those who have been discharged.

Adejobi said, “The Inspector-General of Police has approved the immediate payment of relief funds to the families of officers involved in a fatal motor accident on September 24, while returning from the Edo Elections Special Duty to the Kano State Command.

The accident, which occurred along Karfi Kura route, resulted in the loss of five officers, with 11 hospitalised, following the incident. Eight individuals have been successfully discharged after receiving medical attention, while three others are still undergoing treatment.

“In response to this tragic event, the IGP has taken decisive action to provide support to those affected, by approving compensatory payments of N10,000,000 to the families of the deceased, acknowledging their profound loss and offering assistance during this difficult period.

“The IGP also approved the payment of N2,000,000 to those still receiving treatment, ensuring that they receive the necessary medical support as they recuperate and N500,000 to those who have been discharged after treatment.”

Adejobi added that the IGP had pledged ongoing support for officers and their families whenever needed.

He said, “The IGP reaffirms the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to support officers and their families during trying times. The IGP once again expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and prays for the quick recovery of those still receiving medical care.”
