House of Representatives has directed the police and Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, to urgently collaborate and arrest all vehicle owners with fake plate numbers across the country.
This was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance moved during yesterday’s plenary by Matthew Nwogu.
Raising his motion, Nwogu informed that the purpose of vehicle plate numbers is for easy identification of vehicles and to enable security agencies trace and identify any vehicle suspected of involvement in the commission of crime.
Citing from a newspaper publication report of February 7, the lawmaker quoted the Lagos State Sector Commander of FRSC who claimed that most fake number plates used for crime in the country, bear the tags of respected institutions such as the Presidency, Nigeria Youth Council, NYC, and National Association of Nigeria
Students, NANS, among others.
Those who spoke during contributions expressed worry that the ‘one chance’ robbery and kidnapping incident in Nigeria has been linked to fake vehicle plate numbers, with some falling victim while some met their untimely death in the hands of these criminals.
The House also urged the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force so as to intensify efforts in arresting users of fake plate numbers and ensure that the producers are traced, tried and prosecuted.
It mandated its committee on Federal Road Safety Commission to ensure urgent compliance and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
