Federal government has disclosed that  Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State will reopen Monday, following the completion of emergency repairs on the runway.

On April 18, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, announced the temporary closure of the airport after a sudden and major rupture appeared in the asphalt surface at a critical part of the runway.

Its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah  said the repairs were initially planned to be completed later, but  work was swiftly done.

“The work was scheduled to begin on April 22 and conclude before reopening on May 6.

“However, rehabilitation works on the runway have been completed and it is cleared for landings and takeoffs by the engineers working with FAAN.

“FAAN appreciates all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time,” he said.

Orah said the authority apologised for the inconvenience, but assured the public that all actions were taken for safety.
