Ensure Our Democracy Is Not Endangered, Barr. Turaki Tasks Nigerians

By Chidozie Ogbonnaya

A Well-meaning and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Barrister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has called on Nigerians to do all their possible best to ensure that the nation’s nascent democracy is not endangered or put at great risk as a result of the actions or inactions of any person or group of persons that have come to reap where they have not sowed.

Barr. Turaki made this call in his democracy day message released to AljazirahNigeria on Tuesday, he stressed that our founding fathers, past leaders, and Patriots have paid massive price for the democracy we enjoy today, hence the need for its preservation.

The former minister of special duties and former chairman of the presidential committee on dialogue with insurgents, also extol the virtues of past leaders, and had this to say;

“What we are celebrating today is a harvest of fruits,  the tree of which was planted by our leaders like Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe,  Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa,  Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sarduna of Sokoto,  the great sage,  Chief Obafemi Awolowo and their contemporaries  ; nurtured by great patriots like Alhaji Shehu Shagari,  Malam Aminu Kano,  K O Mbadiwe, Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim,  Chief Solomon Daushep Lar, Chief Joseph Tarka , Chief Aper Aku,  Papa Ajasin,  Chief Sam Mbakwe and their peers, and watered by the blood of people like Chief MKO Abiola, and other martyrs of democracy.

“This tree was again looked after by our leaders like Presidents Obasanjo, Yaradua, and Jonathan, who maintained that his ambition was not worth the blood of any Nigerian both in words and deeds. It’s therefore very important that we do not forget the great sacrifices that have been made by these leaders in ensuring that we have a strong pedestal that seeks to protect not only our rights and freedoms but even our norms and democratic values and cultures,’’he said.

Turaki encouraged Nigerians, stressing that Nigeria can, and indeed will be great again with an honest,  selfless, listening,  committed and focussed leadership that will treat us fairly and equally,  irrespective of our beliefs,  creed,  and/or the circumstances of our birth.

The Politician who described himself as an ordinary Nigerian, a lawyer who has climbed to the highest level any lawyer can get in Nigeria, wished Nigerians in the country and in diaspora a Happy Democracy Day Nigeria to most resilient and ever patient country men and women.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari in his democracy day address to Nigerians restated his administration ‘s determination to win the ongoing war against corruption. He also used the occasion to reel out some of his achievement since the birth of his administration.

Here are some excerpts of President Buhari’s speech:

“The second primary object of this Administration is to fight corruption headlong.

“Like I have always said, if we don’t kill corruption, corruption will destroy the country. Three years into this Administration, Nigerians and the international community have begun to applaud our policies and determination to fight corruption.

“We are more than ever before determined to win this war, however hard the road is.

“I, therefore, appeal to all well-meaning Nigerians to continue to support us in this fight,’’ he said.

In the administration’s achievements, President Buhari told Nigerians that, N200 billion has so far been saved from elimination of ghost workers in public service while Whistle-Blowing Policy had helped to recover over N500 billion.

“Presidential Initiative on Continuous Audit, set up with a mandate to validate controls, assess risks, prune personnel costs, ensure compliance with Public Financial Management reforms, had helped to identify and remove over 52,000 ghost workers from the Federal Government MDAs Payroll.

“The Voluntary Asset and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS), aimed at expanding tax education and awareness, has offered the opportunity for tax defaulters to regularise their status in order to enjoy the amnesty on overdue interest, penalties and the assurance of non-prosecution or subject to tax investigations.

“Sovereign Wealth Fund project portfolio had been expanded with an injection of 650 million dollars,’’he said.

Buhari also said the recapitalization of the Fund was meant to strengthen its investment in local infrastructure, power, health, re-construction of Abuja-Kano road, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, East-West Road (Section V) and the Mambilla Hydro-electric Power project as well as the construction of the 2ndNiger Bridge.
