The West African Civil Society Forum WACSOF has condemned the killings of peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll gate on Tuesday, 20 October, saying  that even if protesters were breaching curfew, such actions did not warrant the use of live ammunition by the Nigerian military.

This was disclosed in a statement by the General Secretary WACSOF on Wednesday saying that the Civil Society Forum condemns the “…act of recklessness and lawlessness by the Nigerian security

According to the statement, WACSOF is observing with great dismay the use of lethal force by law enforcement agents on #ENDSARS peaceful protest in Lagos Nigeria on 20th October 2020

“The Nigeria constitution has embedded in its principles that guarantee the fundamental human rights of all the citizens to life. This has been obviously violated

“WACSOF strongly condemns the brutal, despicable killing of young and peaceful #ENDSARS by army security officials at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos,

WACSOF is concerned that many armed thugs have been mobilized to disturb and attack peaceful protesters without the police or security officials interfering to protect the citizens,

The statement added: “WACSOF is calling on Nigeria government to: Uphold the right of the citizen as it is their constitutional right to protest peacefully,

“Respect the ECOWAS protocol on democracy and good governance which stipulates that the uses of arms to disperse non-violent meetings or demonstrations shall be forbidden,

“To thoroughly investigate, determine responsibility and bring to justice those responsible for the loss of lives at the protest grounds.

“To positively dialogue with the youths and provide lasting and satisfying solutions. To involve civil society organizations to help mediate in the crisis. To protect the citizens and ease any form of harassment or abuse on them

“WACSOF is also calling on ECOWAS to swiftly intervene in the current situation in Nigeria

“WACSOF condemns any form of police brutality and calls on ECOWAS countries and relevant authority to address this unending menace.”
