Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state has expressed delight over the successful inauguration of leaders to take over the vacant posts of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman and that of the state’s Chief Judge, who were sworn-in on Wednesday in Uyo, the state capital.

The new PDP Chairman, Mr. Aniekan Akpan, a former school Principal, had served in various capacities including Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government, state House of Assembly, Commissioner for Education and Commissioner in the Local Government Service Commission.

He succeeded his late kinsman, Obong Udo Ekpenyong, who died January this year under circumstances linked to Coronavirus (COVID-19).

3,784 accredited delegates drawn from the 329 Wards across the 31Local Government Areas voted unanimously for the sole candidate, who is expected to serve out the tenure left with the exit of Ekpenyong. At the Special Congress Committee held at Chief Godswill Akpabio International stadium (Nest of Champions) chaired by the PDP National Legal Adviser, Mr. Emmanuel Enoidem, the elated governor, who danced and shouted “PDP”, charged members and stakeholders of the party to be united and work towards the collective interest of the PDP.

The new Chairman, Akpan, expressed delights and vowed to work assiduously for Emmanuel’s completion agenda to succeed as well a successor in his (Emmanuel’s) mold to take over in 2023 “in order to sustain the legacies of the administration”.

“I am stepping into the big shoes left behind by my brother and former state Chiarman, Obong Udo Ekpenyong, who passed on early this year”, he said and pledged to work with party faithful across all structures to take the party to loftier heights.

In the same vein, the governor swore-in the new acting Chief Judge, Justice Ekaette Obot, 58, at the Exco Chambers of the Government House, with a charge to her to effectively discharge the responsibilities of the law without fear or favour, explaining that her choice was partly informed by gender to represent the womenfolk.

“Let me congratulate the newly sworn-in acting Chief Judge, don’t ask me how the selection process came, she has served the state so well. It is a good thing and I don’t have any doubt that she will do well. You know women are really struggling and should be given a chance in the society”, the governor said.

Obot, who took over from the retired Justice Godwin Abraham, hails from the governor’s hometown, Onna Local Government Area.
