The Emir of Bade and Deputy Chairman Yobe State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Abubakar Sulayman, has condoled with families of victims of the boat mishap at Jumbam village of Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State on Saturday.

He expressed sadness over the incident which involved some adults and children of the community from Jumbam village who were on their way to daily activities.

He added that boat mishaps have claimed lives in Yobe and vowed to ensure that all measures would be put in place to curb further occurrences within the waterways.

“We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We are greatly pained that this mishap occurred, despite all the measures the community has put in place to forestall such mishaps,”

He explained that he was deeply worried about the fact that this wasn’t the first incidence in the country and that these frequent incidences of large-scale deaths caused by boat mishaps is not only embarrassing, but should also be urgently addressed.

Emir therefore appealed to passengers and boat drivers to obey the rules and guidelines regulating passenger transportation to include the use of life jackets; no sailing at night; the use of standard boats and not overloading the boats, stating that they are key guidelines for safe passenger transportation.

While expressing his sympathy to the family of the victims, the monarch expressed concern about lack of adherence to safety standards such as overloading or lack of safety equipment like life jackets to minimise death in the event of accidents.

He also extended his heart-felt condolences to the affected families, and the government and people of Yobe State and Tarmuwa Local Government Area.
