Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has urged motorists to install and obey speed limiters in their vehicles to ensure safety on the road during the yuletide.

The corps threatened to arrest and prosecute offenders, especially during the ember months.

This warning was issued by the Ebonyi State Sector Commander, FRSC, Mr Henry Igwe, during the launch of its 2024 Ember Months Awareness Campaign in Ebonyi, yesterday.

The sector commander said the command would maintain continuous highway enforcement and rescue patrols.

“We shall pay special attention to the installation of speed limiters among commercial inter-city buses and other vehicles.

“We shall deploy alchoholisers  to test for drunk driving and radar guns to arrest speed violations,” he said.

Igwe charged drivers to drive safely during the ember months, adding that a series of activities had been outlined to promote good road users culture during the festive period.

He said the command would go into more robust partnership with the state ministry of works, transport, National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, among others to ensure safety on the road.

“We will organise town hall meetings with critical stakeholders to address major challenges, articulate solutions and apportion responsibilities for mitigation.

“We will carry out road safety audits on major roads in Abakaliki and beyond, and make recommendations to the state government among others where palliative repairs are required.

“We will continuously embark on public education programmes, media advocacy, motor park rallies and early morning cry.

“This is to educate motorists and other road users on major risk factors this season, especially on road speed violation, night driving, driving under alcohol among others,” he said.

Commissioner for Works, Mr Stanley Mbam noted that the state government is determined to ensure that roads are safe during the festive period.

“We are using this opportunity to urge motorists to observe safety regulations, to ensure a safe festive season.

“We are urging the public to observe the road signs mounted at various spots where road maintenance is ongoing.

“We commend Governor Francis Nwifuru for his efforts in enhancing the wellbeing of the people with road safety being paramount,” he added.
