Elozino’s Killing: Tears Flow As Delta Court Adjourns Trial Of Suspect

Nosa Eresoyen, Asaba

Tears flowed freely on Tuesday in Asaba, Delta State from relations of the slain Elozino Ogege when the trail of the suspected killers of their daughter was adjourned by the Asaba High Court till October 21,2020.

Apart from the Ogege’s relations who were seen weeping openly, sympathizers who thronged the court for the proceedings, could also not hold back their tears as they wept profusely at the court premises, gnashing their teeth as they rain curses on the suspects.

Recall that Elozino Ogege, a 300 level Mass Communication student of the Delta State University ( DELSU) was few months allegedly murdered by suspected ritualists, a situation that hitherto had unsettled the state government even though action with a view to bringing the suspects to arrest was taken.

But the suspects who had been standing trial over the months, have pleaded not guilty before the court, while on Tuesday the trial was adjourned following the inability of the defence counsel to file his final written address on trial within trial with the time frame stipulated by the court.

However, at the resumption of proceedings, which was for adoption of the final written address for the trial within trial, Counsel to the third defendant, Barr Ben Okoh, made an oral application for the extension of time to regularize the filling of his written address as the initial filling he made was filled out of time.

According to Barr Okoh, “My lord, today was supposed to be for the adoption of final written address for trial within trial, but I am appealing for the extension of time to regularize the filing of my client’s final written address because we filed out time before now”.

Although the presiding Judge, Justice FN Azinge was visibly angry, but however scolded him for filling out of time because he does not want the matter to end , to which he responded by saying that his actions were not deliberate.

Justice Azinge further warned that she would no longer entertain such application from the defence counsel and asked Barr Patricia Akamagwuna, the state counsel if she had any objection to the oral application which she said was not opposing to, except otherwise.

The presiding Judge therefore disclosed that she was granting the application to enable the defence counsel regularize the filling of his final written address on trial within trial on or before the adjourned date, October 21, 2020.

In a mild drama, Elozino’s sympathizers resorted to curses on the suspects with their Bibles positioned to the sky in anger of invitation to God to pass his Judgment on the suspected killers of the girl who they described as intelligent and humble that was unfortunately cut to size by the evil doers in their quest for wealth.
