FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY
Candidate of Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 presidential election, Mr Peter Obi was in Benin, the Edo State capital on Saturday to kick-start the electoral campaign of the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Olumide Akpata, ahead of the September 21 governorship election.
Obi, who led an entourage of Labour Party leaders, was received at the Benin Airport by Akpata and his running mate, Alhaji Yusuf Kadiri, amidst a mammoth crowd.
Their first point of call was the palace of the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II to seek his blessings ahead of the election.
While thanking the monarch for his fatherly role, the former Anambra State governor said the nation could only be great if there is free, fair and credible election.
He said he believes that with the oba’s prayers, the party could make a headway as it begins its political campaign ahead of the September 21 governorship election.
Also speaking, Akpata said it would be very wrong for him to have gone on with his campaign without visiting for his blessings.
He said he believes that his prayers will go a long way as he embarks on his mission of rescuing the state.
Akpata said that the party is strong and vibrant to wrestle power and deliver the dividends of democracy to the 18 local government areas.
Responding, Oba Ewuare wished them well as they take their political campaign through the length and breadth of the state.
Mr Obi was also at the party secretariat before embarking on a road walk through major parts of Benin metropolis.
The party used the opportunity to inaugurate its campaign secretariat in Benin.
