Nigerian sport cannot be isolated from everything else within the political and geographical space called Nigeria. Sport is a part and parcel of the council reflected in the present state of affairs as captured by different commentators in media conversations all over the country.
The consensus is that the country is not in a healthy state. Sport, therefore, is a microcosm of the country itself.
So, unless we treat the matter of sport differently, by choosing to look at it with microscopic tools, as we do to other sectors, and design a new future from that, we shall only continue to wander rudderless in the wilderness of ordinary performances in a sea of limitless potential and possibilities.
All things considered, the answer can be summed up in two words – colossal failure!
But recent action of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is like a turning point for the Sports entirely by scraping sport Ministry and returned the National Sports Commission, NSC.
Not only that President Tinubu also appointed Shehu Dikko, a former Vice-President of the Nigeria Football Federation ,NFF, as the chairman of NSC.
Frankly speaking, with these step toward sports development, there is optimism that the decision would bring new structures and policies to bear on sports development.
The NSC is a government agency responsible for the development and promotion of sports in Nigeria. It was established in 1963 and is headquartered in Abuja.
The NSC’s main objectives include: Developing and promoting sports at the grassroots level, encouraging participation in sports and physical education, identifying and nurturing talented athletes, Organizing national and international sports competitions, Collaborating with international sports organizations.
While Some of the key functions of the NSC are Supervising national sports federations, Providing funding and resources for sports development, Maintaining sports infrastructure, Organizing training programs for coaches and athletes, Promoting sports as a tool for national unity and development.
However, if the objective is duly followed, it will usher in a fresh start and way forward in the scheme of things, especially developing the youths by enacting programmes and policies that would transform sports.
The few years may have been largely dark but with bold step taken by President, there is daylight at the end of the tunnel.
