Ebonyi first lady, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru has said that her pet project, Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced Persons,(BERWO) and Safe Child Advocacy (an NGO) are working with the Ghanaian police authorities at combat human trafficking, share best practices, and ensure the safe return and rehabilitation of the fifteen victims.
The wife of the governor made the disclosure in a statement signed by press Secretary, Nnenna Oshibe and made available to newsmen on Friday.
Nwifuru, who explained that she met with Ghanaian officials, NGOs, and international organizations added that she discussed ways to combat human trafficking.
According to her, “The workshop emphasized the importance of increased awareness, education, and community engagement to prevent the societal menace of human trafficking
“The workshop, which took place at Kumasi, Ghana on the 8th of July 2024, aimed to address the plight of Nigerian girls and boys being trafficked to other African countries.
“Of particular concern was the case of 15 Ebonyi girls aged between 18 and 24 years who are being housed in different centres in Kumasi.
She emphasized that the workshop sought to facilitate collaboration between her foundation, Better Health for Rural Women Children and Internally Displaced Persons, and Safe Child Advocacy ( NGO) and the Ghanaian police authorities to combat human trafficking, share best practices, and ensure the safe return and rehabilitation of victims.
“I met with Ghanaian officials, NGOs, and international organizations to discuss ways to combat human trafficking. The workshop emphasized the importance of increased awareness, education, and community engagement to prevent the societal menace of human trafficking.
“The organizers of the workshop made me tour a safe centre that provides emotional support to victims as well as reassurance for their safe return.
“This entire experience underscores my foundation’s commitment to combating human trafficking and ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable people in EbonyiState, especially retrieval of the 15 Ebonyi girls
