Driver Arrested As Gunmen Cart Away N15m At A’Ibom A-G’s Office

Unknown Gunmen have intercepted cash of N15 million ferried from a second generation bank to the office of the Accountant General, A-G, of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Uwem Andrew-Essien, it was learnt yesterday.

The driver, according to Police sources has been arrested and interrogated with a view to ascertaining “whether it was an insider’s job or a normal robbery incident”.

A senior civi servant at the A-G’s office, who would not want his name in print, told our Correspondent that the armed men trailed the car from the Udo Udoma banking layout, Uyo, soon after the cash had been loaded into the car.

According to him, the robbers followed the vehicle into the State secretariat from the main gate and accosted the driver at the gate to the A-G’s office as he was about branching off into the premises to off-load the cash.

“What surprised us was the fact that the robbers passed the first gate with ease and drove peacefully black after collecting the money without firing a single shot.

“That is the major reason why they ordered his arrest perhaps there was an internal collaboration because the incident happened in a jiffy and the driver yielded easily without much resistance”, he explained.

However, the A-G, Andrew-Essien, who confirmed the incident, said the ‘only the Cashier or the Head of the Department, HoD, were in a better position to give details.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Supol Odiko Macdon, could pick calls at the time of filing this report.
