From Haruna Aliyu Usman, Birnin Kebbi

Hunger is currently looming in Kebbi particularly in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital as hundreds of households who patronises raw food vendors in the state’s central market remain stranded and without food because food vendors now rejects old naira notes before the deadline fixed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

However, food vendors stalls remain forlorn except a few adamant traders insisting on new naira notes making rice inadequate because buyers keep filing up while they continue to rejects the old notes.

Earlier, the state chairman of Kebbi state market traders association, Alhaji Dangura Zauro has fixed January 25, 2023, as date for traders in the market to reject old notes which is Wednesday.

“We are surprised that food vendors began the rejection on Sunday, though most of them are rural dwellers who do not have bank accounts, they don’t even accept transfer because they don’t have accounts”.

He explained that other traders will continue to accept the old notes till January 25, 2023.

He lamentated that the Central Bank of Nigeria was responsible for the drama and rejections of the old notes, because they circulated specimen of new and old currency notes warning people not to wait till January 31.

He appealed to the Apex bank to consider the plights of the buyers and the food vendors by either extending the date or force commercial banks to make available the new naira notes for people to meet the deadline.
