Student of Alfred Jonah International School in Sapele, Delta State, Sunmenu Abdurahman has emerged the star prize winner of the 2024 Annual Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition for Secondary School Students.
The prestigious award ceremony, which held yesterday at Provil School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was organised by the Chemical Society of Nigeria, CSN.
In his address, Delta State Chairman of the Chemical Society of Nigeria, Koide Owate commended the students, teachers, parents and the Ministry of Secondary Education for their exceptional performance and commitment to excellence.
He expressed profound gratitude to Chevron Nigeria Limited, sponsor of Awokoya Chemistry Competition, for their unwavering support.
Owate noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had significantly impacted the programme, making it challenging for the Chemical Society of Nigeria to undertake the award ceremony for three years (2020-2022). However, he attributed its successful return in 2023 to the resilience and commitment of Chevron Nigeria Limited.
The Delta State contingent performed exceptionally well, securing the first, second and third positions. Owate encouraged the awardees and attendees to take their study of chemistry seriously and pursue careers in science-related fields to improve their lives and contribute positively to the society.
Highlight of the programme was the presentation of plaques to the state prize winner, the runner-up and third-place winner.
Other awardees include participating schools, teachers and individuals who have made significant contributions to the competition.
Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition is an annual event that aims to promote excellence in chemistry among secondary school students.
The competition is a testimony to the importance of science education in Nigeria and the need to encourage and support young minds to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The success of Master Abdurahman and the Delta State contingent is a reflection of the state’s commitment to education and its determination to produce future leaders in science and technology.
