Delta Assembly Reiterates Commitment To Enact People-oriented Laws

Date:

Delta House of Assembly has pledged to remain focused on enacting laws for the enhancement of the overall well-being of the people.

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr Dennis Guwor, stated this when a delegation of the Delta Online Publishers’ Forum ,DOPF, paid a courtesy visit on him yesterday in Asaba.

Guwor noted that the legislature remained the symbol of democracy,  saddled with the constitutional responsibility of making laws for the peace, order and good governance of the state

He noted that the eight Assembly under his watch had passed a good number of bills, which had been assented to by the Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori.

Guwor also noted  that the House Committee on Legislative Compliance, headed by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Arthur Akpowowo, had taken steps to ensure compliance with the laws enacted by the House.

”By the grace of God, we are working towards ensuring that laws enacted by this House are implemented, ” he said.

The Speaker, however, noted that some  challenges affecting the society not covered by law, such as housing, transportation and high cost of living, were being addressed by the Executive.

He commended the media, particularly the Delta Online Publishers’ Forum ,DOPF, for being a partner in progress and assured that the cordial relationship between the body and the House would be improved on.

Guwor, who is also the National Treasurer, Conference of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly in Nigeria, said the doors of the Assembly were open to journalists.

He urged them to seek clarifications on issues affecting the House before going to press to avoid misinformation.

Earlier, Chairman, DOPF, Emmanuel Enebeli, told the Speaker that the forum comprised of seasoned journalists, who had transitioned into leadership roles as Chief Executive officers of their respective media organisations.

Enebeli said since inception of the group in 2017, the forum had remained committed to promoting ethical journalism, fostering strong partnerships with key stakeholders, and contributed to the development of Delta.

He noted that the vigorous legislative activities and robust oversight functions of the State Assembly,  had helped to firmly entrench the democratic process in the political system.

Enebeli, while expressing confidence that the Speaker’s tenure would bring about a continued progress for the state, acknowledged the role played by Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori, when he was the Speaker.

He recalled that his encouragement was invaluable, particularly to the Forum’s registration with the CAC, as well as the commencement of its annual lectures, which had become a key platform for dialogue on critical issues.

“We are eager to continue to foster a strong relationship with your leadership, just as we did with Oborevwori.

“Mr Speaker, the DOPF has closely monitored the activities of the Delta State House of Assembly under your leadership, and we are pleased with the significant strides made so far.

”Your focus on security, particularly addressing the persistent clashes between farmers and herders, has been both timely and commendable.

”We are aware of how these conflicts have severely impacted farming activities and contributed to food insecurity in parts of the state”, Enebeli stated.
