FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY
Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku has refuted the claim made by some media outlets regarding his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
A statement from his office clarified that Agbebaku never stated that he defected to the APC to retain the benefits associated with his prestigious office.
The statement emphasized that the speaker’s decision to change parties was driven solely by his desire to promote the development of his homeland, but Owan West Constituency.
The statement emphasised that at no point did the speaker claim that his move from the PDP to APC was motivated by personal gains or financial incentives.
It noted that Agbebaku, as a dedicated patriot, is committed to collaboration to achieve good governance.
“The report falsely claims that the speaker defected from the PDP to the APC in order to retain the benefits of his office. This allegation is categorically false, baseless and represents a clear misrepresentation of his statements and intentions,” he said.
During the announcement of his defection, Agbebaku stated that his move to the APC was driven by a commitment to promote sustained development for the people of Owan West Constituency. At no point did he imply that his defection was motivated by personal gain or financial benefits.
He stressed the importance of greater collaboration with Governor Monday Okpebholo to deliver tangible benefits to the people. Notably, he pointed out the governor’s recent approval for the rehabilitation of schools and roads in Owan West—projects that will directly impact the lives of his constituents.
The speaker remains dedicated to serving the public with integrity and purpose. He views the spread of such falsehood as a distraction from the crucial work of governance and development.
“We urge the media platforms to retract this erroneous publication and cease the dissemination of this misleading narrative. The media has a responsibility to uphold truth, accuracy, and professionalism in their reporting.”
