Defection: APC To Sue Ortom, Obaseki, Others

BY CALEB ISHAYA, ABUJA

In retaliation of the court judgement which last week sacked the governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, and his deputy, Kelechi Igwe, there are indications that the All Progressives Congress, APC, may challenge the defection of Governors Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto, Samuel Ortom of Benue and Godwin Obaseki of Edo States to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Recall that Tambuwal, Ortom and Obaseki defected to the PDP at the tail-end of  their first term mandate on the platform of the APC.

Also, according to reliable sources, the ruling party is seeking a 30-year ban on former Senate President Bukola Saraki from contesting any elective post for defecting after winning his seat on the platform of the APC.

A source in the party said a team of lawyers had been briefed on the proposed legal battle, but is being stalled due to the leadership crisis in the party.

“It is true the party is in the process of instituting a suit against some governors who defected from our party to the opposition PDP. The action would have since commenced but for a leadership crisis.

“I can reliably tell you that we have concluded consultations with a team of lawyers, as soon as the ongoing leadership crisis is resolved we hope to commence the action”, the source disclosed.

Meanwhile, Governor Umahi had last week disclosed that his deputy, him and others had approached the Court of Appeal and had applied for a stay of execution of the ruling by Justice Inyang Ekwo who at the same time gave the verdict which also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to accept replacements of the Ebonyi governor, his deputy and 17 members of the state House of Assembly who defected to the APC.

Also the Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Drainage and Water Resources, Joe Igbokwe was the first to leak the news of the plans by the APC to challenge the trio of Govs Tambuwal, Obaseki and Ortom  to the court  and has warned that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, should cut its jubilation over the judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja which ordered the Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, and his deputy, Kelechi Igwe, to vacate their seats following their defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Igbokwe took to his social media page to share Kurtis Adigba’s statement about the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the PDP regarding the coming elections

The statement had observed that if APC loses the Ebonyi State governorship seat, the PDP should also be ready to lose Sokoto, Benue and Edo States.

He, however, said that the only state in Nigeria that the PDP would regain was Zamfara, which would be a net loss of one for the opposition party.

“If APC loses Ebonyi State, PDP should be ready to lose Sokoto, Benue, and Edo State. PDP will regain Zamfara, it will still be a net loss of 1 for PDP”, the statement said.
