DEFECTION: 2023 Running Mate Candidacy Miscalculation – Okowa

By Yahaya Umar, Abuja

Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has said that his outing as Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Vice-presidential candidate in 2023 election was a miscalculation.

Okowa, who said this yesterday while speaking on Arise TV News said his candidacy contradicted the zoning and wishes of Delta State people.

According to him,  “When we were campaigning, I realised our people were not interested in having another northerner come into power.

“But the decision had already been taken at the federal level by the PDP and I had been nominated. Still, in retrospect, I now believe I should have gone with the will of my people”.

Commenting on PDP presidential candidate in last election, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Okowa, hinted that the Turakin Adamawa is preparing to dump Peoples Democratic Party, as preparations for 2027 general elections gather momentum.

Furthermore, he said “I actually did communicate with him (Atiku) that we were going to have stakeholders meetings and that it was going to be a leadership meeting and the outcome of that meeting was going to determine our next path because we were no longer comfortable with the PDP.

“And I also know that he is already heading out of the PDP from the communications he has passed on to me, and that Nigerians know already.”

He also hit back a former President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki for criticising his defection the All Progressives Party, APC, recalling that Saraki lacks the basis to comment on or criticise his defection in view of the fact that the onetime number 3 man once moved to the APC.

AljazirahNigeria reports that President Bola Tinubu  described the mass defection of PDP chieftains including Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and entire Delta chapter of the People Democratic Party, PDP, to the ruling All Progressives Congress as a political tsunami.

Tinubu, stated this in Asaba, on Monday at a formal ceremony organised to receive Oborevwori and other PDP stalwarts to the APC.

Represented by Vice President, Kassim Shettima, Tinubu, said that no testimony could be greater than such a political movement from one political party to another in the history of Nigeria than what happened today.

According to Tinubu, today’s movement is a political tsunami of unimaginable proportion that has ever happened in the south south subregion and in the history of Nigeria.

“A tsunami of this proportion has never happened before , for all the members of the National Assembly, the Speaker and members of the State House of Assembly, the governor, his cabinet, 25 Local Government Council Chairmen, 500 councillors are now members of the APC”, he said.
