24 hour curfew has been impossed on Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State by governor Hyacinth Alia.
The development followed grave security situation in the region that has led to the wanton destruction of lives and property leading to instability of the area.
Governor, Alia who announced the decision yesterday in Makurdi, through his deputy, Sam Ode in a statement by his technical adviser Solomon Iorpev, said the curfew would be observed from 6PM to 6AM beginning from Wednesday untill further notice.
He called for calm as security operatives have been deployed in their numbers to keep the peace in Ukum in particular and the Sankera region at large.
Information available to Aljazirah indicates that suspected Fulani herdsmen allegedly without provocation stormed Boikyo community of Ukum in the wee hours of Tuesday and slaughtered six persons in cold blood.
According to the informant who pleaded anonymity, the killings sparked off protest from members of the community who blocked the major road linking the area, demanding for immediate government response.
He said not satisfied with government swift response, the villagers started burning houses of prominent government officials in the area, as well as torch lighting the Local Government Secretariat Ukum at Sankera.
