Courts Shut, As Gunmen Kill lawyer In Imo

Courts in Mgbidi, Oguta and Omumma areas of Imo State were yesterday shut down, following the killing of a legal practitioner, Chinedu Nwowu.

The legal practitioner, Aljazirah Nigeria gathered, was double crossed and shot dead on Wednesday evening in Mgbidi, his hometown.

A source said  some gun-bearing men forcefully blocked the victim while driving and shot him dead.

The development had caused panic in the state, as no reason had been disclosed for his murder.

Following the tragic development, Orlu Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, the branch the deceased belonged to, had announced that no court session would go on yesterday in Mgbidi, Oguta and Omumma axis of the state.

The branch announced an emergency meeting, following the killing of the lawyer.

A memo issued by Chukwuemeka Okoro, on behalf of the branch, notified that the emergency meeting starts at 10am at High Court in Mgbidi.

The statement reads”following the gruesome  murder of one of us,  Nwowu last night in his town, Mgbidi, all lawyers of Oru/Oguta Forum are hereby notified of a crucial emergency meeting this morning by 10am at the High Court, Mgbidi.

“Mgbidi, Oguta and Omumma High Courts will not sit today. Please, be punctual.”

The NBA Chairman of Orlu Branch, Ben Amukamara, told our correspondent that  members  met at  Mgbidi High Court yesterday, following the killing of the lawyer.

He said  no court in Oguta, Mgbidi and Omumma axis would sit. 

Spokesperson for the police, Henry Okoye, was yet to respond to an inquiry concerning the killing of the lawyer as at the time of filing this report.
