Court Nullifies Ebonyi PDP Gov Primary Rerun, Affirms Odii As Candidate

By Deborah Musa

Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki has nullified the rescheduled governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ebonyi State and declared Dr Ifeanyi-Chukwuma Odii as the authentic governorship candidate for the 2023 polls.

The party conducted fresh primaries on June 4 and 5 after its initial primaries on May 28 and 29 which elected Odii as governorship candidate.

In its ruling yesterday, the court averred that the primary election that produced Senator Obinna Ogba and other candidates were illegal, unconstitutional, null, and void.

The presiding judge, Fatun Riman said the repeated primaries on June 4 and 5 were not monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

According to Riman, the rescheduled PDP primaries in Ebonyi is null and void.“One, the rescheduled primaries were conducted when the suit filed on May 30 was already pending in court.

“The primaries were not monitored by INEC, therefore, the rescheduled exercise of June 4 and 5 that elected Senator Obinna Ogba as another gubernatorial candidate and others are hereby nullified”, the judge stated.

Reacting to the judgement, counsel to Odii, Mr Mudi Erhenede noted that the ruling had interpreted the constitution of the party.

“Selfish individuals or group interests will by no means supersede the party’s interest. Good thing is that justice has been done in the matter’’.

Efforts to reach Ogba’s counsel were abortive as they left the court before the judgement.
