Children’s Day: Reps Urge FG To Prioritise Policies In Support of  Health, Education

House of Representatives has called on the federal government to prioritise policies that would support children’s health, education and welfare.

It also urged government at the centre to prioritise investments in ICT infrastructure, particularly in rural communities in order to ensure equitable access for all children, as well as review the Child Rights Act.

These  resolutions were adopted yesterday during a valedictory plenary in honour of five lawmakers who died while serving in the House.

During the plenary, the member representing Kosofe Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Kafilat Ogbara urged the the National Assembly to expedite action on the passage of the  National Child Protection and Enforcement Agency Bill.

The lawmaker, who is also the chairman, House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, noted that the International Children’s Day is a vital occasion to reaffirm commitment to the rights and well-being of children both in Nigeria and around the world.

According to her, this year’s theme, ‘Our Future and Our Responsibility,’ resonates with the challenges and responsibilities of 2025, symbolising a pivotal moment of hope and rights advocacy.

Emphasising the importance of  Children’s Day, the lawmaker observed that children are the cornerstone of Nigeria’s future, adding that their well-being is indispensable for the progress and prosperity of the society.

She reminded her colleagues of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, emphasising the importance of educational resources, as well as that of exacerbating their vulnerabilities.
