CBN Mints N500m eNaira, Issues N200m To Banks- Emefiele

The Central Bank of Nigeria CBN, Governor, Godwin Emefiele has disclosed that the apex bank has minted N500 million, N200 million has been issued to financial institutions, while over 2,000 customers have been onboarded.

The apex bank boss during his remark at the Launching of the Digital Currency, in Abuja stated that over 120 merchants have successfully registered on the eNaira platform.

According to him, since the inception of eNaira platform went live there has been over 2.5 million daily visits to the website by Nigerians across the World.
“Since the eNaira platform went live, there has been overwhelming interest and encouraging response from Nigerians and other parties across the world with over 2.5 million daily visits to the website with the following milestones: 33 banks are fully integrated and live on the platform.

” N500 million has been successfully minted by the Bank.N200 million has been issued to financial institutions.Over 2,000 customers have been onboarded.Over 120 merchants have successfully registered on the eNaira platform,” he said.
Emefiele noted that the eNaira is a journey that starts today, saying it is a journey of possibilities.
He added that the bank  will continue to refine, fine-tune and upgrade it. 

He said that  Nigerians should expect to see additional functionalities in the coming months which includes :Accessibility and onboarding of customers without BVN, and the use of the eNaria on the phone without the internet will further drive financial inclusion, making Nigeria one of the first countries in the world to deploy the CBDC via USSD on phones without relying on internet connectivity.

He said also onboarding of revenue collection agencies to increase and simplify collections, Creation of sector-specific tokens to support the Federal Government’s social programmes and distribution of targeted welfare schemes in a bid to lift millions out of poverty by 2025.
Emefiele emphasized that the success of the eNaira project could not have come without the active collaboration of several stakeholders inside and outside the government.

“I am grateful to all of these agencies and leaders. In particular, I would like to thank the Hon Minister for Communication and Digital Economy, and the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission and all the other agencies under the Ministry for their collaboration and assistance.

According to him, CBN acknowledges the daunting task ahead has called on all relevant stakeholders including the Financial Institutions, NIBSS, FinTech groups, Telcos and merchants to collaborate, innovate, deepen and enhance the value of eNaira to Nigerians and to Nigeria.

He said that the Bank’s hope that the eNaira will drive the digital economy agenda and foster a more prosperous Nigeria.
